How to Have It All…Or Most of It!

Last week my friend Crystal, who I graduated from high school with, surprised me and dropped off something at my house that we were trying to coordinate a meetup for the night before.  I didn’t know she was coming so I had no time to “prepare.”

I was in the house and heard my husband talking to someone outside.  I figured it was just my Mom who lives next door.  Well imagine my devastating surprise when Crystal walked in the house…it was after noon and I was still in my pj’s, glasses on, hair thrown up into some kind of knot that kept it off of my neck in the heat, and the house was a DISASTER!  People that are at my house frequently know how it is…with two small children and working more than full-time from home, sometimes I just don’t get to the dirty dishes, the mountains of laundry, or the toys that are constantly scattered all over my living room (even minutes after I clean them up).  But Crystal had never been to my house before so I would have at least liked to make a good impression!  Surprisingly she really didn’t seem phased by it all one bit…she said the only reason she looked put together like she did was because her mom had her two boys all morning.  Then she said, “I was wondering how you did it all…Being home with the kids and posting all the time along with everything else you do!”  I simply laughed out loud realizing that she now knew I wasn’t Superwoman and had a behind-the-scenes look at my daily life and the things that I didn’t accomplish each day.  

Quite honestly I don’t have it all together.  In fact, I have it far from all together!  Ha!  I remember when I was in school I used to be so organized.  I would have lists and as the day went on would actually get things checked off my list.  But that was before marriage, a house, and my munchkins.  Now, things are a little different.  Now the things on the list aren’t so easy to simply check off.  There is always laundry.  There are always dishes.  As soon as I clean up breakfast it’s time for lunch, then before I know it, dinner.  Throw in some play time with the kids and well, you can see how little time I actually have left to work.  Through the years I’ve learned to put the messy house and all of the other tasks I would like to do on the back burner.  Unfortunately I NEED to work.  And I WANT to spend quality time with my kids.  So those are the things that get bumped to the top of my list.  Each day priorities change (with the exception of my family who is always on top) and so does the list.  I never get everything on the list accomplished, but as long as the most important tasks were on top and they got completed, the day is considered a success.  Afterall, tomorrow is another day! 😀
