School of Savings – Walgreens Shopping

Walgreens

Coupons

While you do not need a membership card to shop there, there are still great ways to save when shopping at Walgreens.  In addition to manufacturer’s coupons, Walgreens also has store coupons.  The most common place you’ll find Walgreens store coupons are in the front of the store in the monthly coupon booklets.  Each month you’ll find a new booklet full of coupons.  These coupons usually don’t need to be handed in, just scanned right out of the book by the cashier so you can use them again on future trips without having to grab another coupon booklet.  The coupon will be applied to as many eligible items as you are purchasing.  For example if there’s a $1 off one Huggies Wipes coupon in the Walgreens coupon booklet and you are purchasing three tubs of wipes, you’ll get $3 off – $1 off for each qualifying item.  There are sometimes also additional coupon booklets that you can find throughout the store such as in the pharmacy or baby aisle and occasionally you’ll find Walgreens store coupons in newspaper inserts.

Register Rewards

Another way to save at Walgreens is with the Register Rewards program.  Register Rewards are manufacturer coupons that print at the register (just like Catalina coupons) when you purchase select items to trigger them.  Even though they are manufacturer coupons they are meant be used in Walgreens, although it’s not unheard of to have another store honor them.  There are some things to know when redeeming Register Rewards.  First, they do not “roll” when purchasing the same items.  For example, if you purchase Bounty paper towels and get a $2 Register Reward for doing so, you can’t use it to purchase another Bounty paper towels and get an additonal $2 Register Reward from that second transaction.  You’ll be able to use the Register Reward to purchase the second paper towels, but a second Register Reward will not be generated.  You can, however, roll Register Rewards between two different deals.  This would be, as an example, if you purchased the Bounty paper towels and got the $2 Register Reward and then used that on a Glade deal to trigger a $3 Glade Register Reward.  You could then use that Glade Register Reward to purchase another Bounty and get back another $2 Bounty Register Reward.

One other thing to know about Register Rewards is that (since they are manufacturer’s coupons) your total number of manufacturer’s coupons and Register Rewards cannot be greater than the number of items you are purchasing.  Walgreen’s store coupons DO NOT count towards this ratio.  So, if you are purchasing five items and have five manufacturer’s coupons and a Register Reward you’ll need a “filler” item so that you are purchasing as many items as coupons that you are trying to redeem.  Filler items are inexpensive items that you can use to correct your coupon to item ratio…think candy bars, gum, etc.

Clearance

As with any store, always be on the lookout for clearance finds too!  In Walgreens these will be marked by either a yellow or orange clearance tag.  The yellow tags are specific to clearance at that particular store, while the orange tags are clearance items issued from corporate and will be available at all Walgreens stores.

Coupon Policy

Some of the great things about Walgreens’ coupon policy are internet printable coupons are accepted, up to two coupons can be used with a Buy One Get One Free sale (one on the item you are purchasing and one on the free item), and you can use one manufacturer’s coupon and one store coupon per item.  View the entire Walgreens coupon policy.

When getting ready to check out at Walgreens always hand over your manufacturer’s coupons first followed by your Walgreens store coupons.  You can hand over any Register Rewards either with your manufacturer’s coupons or at the end of your transaction. 😉
