Here are a few easy ways to stay healthy this winter and keep the flu away. A few simple changes in your habits might be all you need!
If you’ve figured out how to stay healthy this winter so far, that’s great! But it’s definitely no easy task.
No matter how hard you try, sometimes catching a cold or the flu is unavoidable, especially during these cold winter months. It seems like just about anywhere you go someone is coughing or sneezing.
How to Stay Healthy This Winter – 3 Cheap & Easy Ways to Keep the Flu Away
Here are a few easy, and in most cases free, tips for your best chance to keep those bugs away and stay healthy this winter.
Keep your home clean
Probably the easiest and most obvious way to keep germs, including the flu, away from your family is to keep your home clean.
When doing your regular cleaning, don’t miss hotbeds for germs like the kids’ toys, door knobs, light switches, drawer handles, remotes, and game controllers. Be sure to wipe down those cell phones too.
Did you know that a recent study found that your cell phone can harbor 18 times more germs than the handle of a public restroom! Yikes!
A good cleaning doesn’t necessarily mean breaking out the bleach or harsh cleaners. I love using homemade household cleaners or buying non-toxic, natural cleaners.
Speaking of natural, I also love diffusing Germ Destroyer KidSafe essential oil during the winter months to help keep everyone healthy which as a bonus gives our home a wonderful scent.
Wash your hands frequently
Speaking of cleaning, I’m sure we all know how important regular hand washing is, especially during cold and flu season.
Make sure you give your hands a good scrub which is long enough to recite the alphabet song twice. Teach your kiddos to clean under their nails and wash above their wrists to make sure you get rid of all those lingering germs.
Try to avoid touching your face, which is nearly impossible by the way, as most bacteria and viruses enter through our eyes, nose, and mouth.
Maintain a good wellness routine
Some of the easiest ways to keep from getting sick are things we should be doing each day to stay healthy.
Drinking lots of water and getting plenty of rest are at the top of the list. Getting a full night’s sleep will help your immune system stay strong and prepare you for whatever bug comes your way. Flushing your system is as easy as regularly drinking water throughout the day. Staying hydrated can help prevent many illnesses or wash them away if you do happen to catch something.
If you have allergies make sure you keep them under control. If your upper respiratory system is already inflamed from your allergies, it allows it to acquire a virus more easily.
Exercising is another great way to prevent illness as it relieves stress. Even a quick walk around the block can raise your endorphins and boost your mood enough to relieve tension and keep you happy and healthy.
Add a balanced diet, full of fruits and veggies, and you just might make it through this winter season cold and flu free! 🙂
